Clay Hill Elementary students had the opportunity to chat with award-winning author Kate Messner via Skype in their media center today! CHE librarian Tammy Taylor arranged the two Skype sessions with Ms. Messner for students to gain some insight into the writing process and how an author gets a book published. Mrs. Taylor chose Kate Messner because of the enormous popularity of her Sunshine State Young Readers Award nominated book Capture the Flag with Clay Hill students. Ms. Messner explained to students how she brain-stormed ideas, researched her books, and wrote outlines and drafts. She shared her graphic organizer for the Capture the Flag sequel Hide and Seek on screen and gave students a window into the process of revision. Ms. Messner concluded the 45-minute chats with a question and answer session where students asked about cover art, how she felt to see her books on library and bookstore shelves, and what her writing goals were for the coming year. Students were also given the opportunity to order signed copies of Ms. Messner’s books - signed books should be in by late February.
